Interior Design - As a career

Interior Design has many areas to it.

For me, I started as a PA to an Interior Designer, then I went on to styling houses and apartments for real estate agents. 11 years ago I started my own boutique Interior Design business where I mainly work on residential properties which I love however my industry is very diverse and has many elements to it.

In my field of work you get to meet so many interesting people and I have formed some lasting friendships over the years.

Kate Nixon is one of those people.  I met Kate eight years ago when she was featuring one of my projects in a magazine. As the years have passed I have watched Kate grow in many areas of the Interior Design world.  I am so proud of what she has achieved as my friend and colleague.  I look up to her as a career and business woman and over recent years a mum as well.

Kate is the Interiors Editor at House & Garden Magazine which is how I met her.  When chatting to Kate she loves her job.  It is exciting styling homes to be featured in a magazine but you need to be very organised. There is a lot going on with editors, photographers etc and you have to work to tight deadlines.

Not only is Kate Interiors Editor at House & Garden but she also has a beautiful home wares / fabric store called Busatti located in Sydney's Double Bay and North Fremantle WA.  She started this business back in 2007 and is still going strong.

She stumbled across Busatti when holidaying in Italy with her husband Tim.  Falling in love with the fabric based retail concept which was started in 1842 and is still family run, she brought it to Australia.  It is filled with beautiful linens, home wares and fabrics, I highly recommend you pop in it has lots of goodies for all ages.

Kate also runs an Interior Design business out of Busatti.  Over the years this has organically grown.  It has been another service Kate has been able to offer her customers when they visit the shop and has slowly evolved through word of mouth.

Then......... we can’t forget Kate’s biggest achievement her gorgeous children.  Her first born is her beautiful boy Henry who is 3 and just recently her gorgeous little girl Agnes arrived.  Kate is amazing.  She is able to juggle all of her Interior Design jobs and still looks amazing, keeps sane and always has a smile on her face.

Her babies sleep under her desk, on her chest in the Baby Bjorn and sometimes come to photo shoots with her and it always works.

Kate loves what she does and is extremely committed and an inspiration.  I asked her what is her secret to success, she said “Do what you love, work hard and never give up!”
