After School Hunger and Children
I love my children but the mood at school pick up can be scary. Most of the time they get in the car and are like wild animals ready to pounce.
At first I thought it was because they were tired but I quickly learnt they were hungry, really hungry, ravenous even.........
Being married to Frankie who is a Personal Trainer and Sports Physiologist, he decided the boys were getting old enough to start on a protein health shake.
When they are this hungry in the afternoons it's the perfect time to fill them up on something that is good for them. It keeps them calm and satisfies them until dinner time.
My boys are 13 and 11 and love the shake, so does Sienna. It has helped stop the afternoon cravings and they can make it themselves which is a bonus. Dehydration can also be mistaken for hunger and this shake fixes that too.
For me as a mum I love it because it fills them until dinner time. There is no snacking or raiding the pantry and they are drinking something healthy without any additives.
We use frozen berries but mango is great too.
HEALTH SHAKE with PROTEIN POWDER for Tweens & Teens........
Add a small scoop of frozen blueberries
Add a small scoop of frozen strawberries
Add half a frozen banana. (Peel the banana before you freeze it.)
1 x Scoop of Protein Powder (Scoop size depends on your performance and how active you are. For example for Sienna who is 8 we only give her half a scoop of protein powder – she is not as active as the boys and is much smaller). You can purchase protein powder from any health food store or large chemist.
1 Table spoon of Honey
6 x cubes of ice
Add milk to ¾ of the shake container. If you want to make the shake leaner don’t use milk use water instead.
Blend for about 60 seconds or until mixture has been blended.
My kids like the shake thick. You can experiment with this by adding either more ice or milk. Also to make it thick we use frozen fruit (not fresh) which helps.
